Rob was awed. And shocked, and ecstatic, and just plain dumbfounded. It was really difficult to navigate all of those emotions at once, and because of this, he was just walking around with this goofy smile on his face, eyes planted on the ultrasound photo as much as it could be. In fact, even now, as they walked up the hall of the Austin home, Rob had the photo held up to his face, same smile locked in place and proceeding to bang - hand - right into a cabinet filled with china, only just managing not to break anything when Leila, with her impressive reflexes, reached out and caught a teacup before it hit the polished wooden floor.

"It has a nose," Rob said in amazement when he paused and turned to look at her, the smile turning into yet another grin. They had opted on not finding out the sex. They had debated it, and even though the sonographer told them she could see what it was, they didn't want to know. It wasn't like they had long to wait to find out, was it? "Look." He held the photo up for her to see, as if she hadn't already seen it as much as he had. They had been wrestling it off each other since they left the clinic, and even ended up in a minor argument about who would drive, neither wanting to so they could hold the photo on the way home.

For as long as he could remember, Rob had been a light sleeper. A lot of it was probably born of being a soldier, but it never took much to wake him up. It had been a pain in the ass when he had been recuperating from the whole getting blown up thing. He had been a cranky bastard more often than not both from pain and lack of sleep, but again, he had been infinitely lucky to have Leila by his side putting up with it and learning how to handle him at his worst as well as his best. That was what marriage was all about at the end of the day, the vows just said it in a much more fancier way.

Tonight, it was a strange noise out in the hallway that had him woken abruptly, ears straining to listen for what it was... )

By the time Rob and Mike made it the few blocks home, the bottle of scotch was gone. Mike threw caution to the wind and decided to share it with his friend, and when they made it to the front of the apartment block, they were both singing, arms around each other and really not making all that much sense at all. It was a miracle Rob was even still conscious, with Mike managing to hold onto his masculinity just a little bit better and not break into matching giggling fits. Luckily, he was still coordinated enough to prevent Rob tripping into a lamp post and knocking himself out, too, but it was an effort to peel him back up off the side walk when he stumbled anyway. Somewhere also in the whole process, Rob had left a drunken and lewd message on Leila's voicemail followed by a string of text messages which probably just looked like Hieroglyphics. At least he could manage to type the words 'Love', 'Dick' and 'Fuck' clearly. As far as his pissed brain was concerned, he was writing her romantic poetry.

They reached their destination, and halted in front of the entry of the block. Mike was holding Rob up and trying to simultaneously dig Rob's keys from the pocket of his jeans, not having much luck the way Rob was swaying and continuously losing his footing... )

There was a light snow laying that morning from a fall the night before. It was cold, but nothing that Mike couldn't handle. He rubbed his hands together and blew on them, shaking some snow off his heavy booty as he watched the familiar-looking Army building that Rob had disappeared into a good hour ago. This was Mike's first time at Fort Hamilton, but he had basically made it impossible for Rob to refuse to let him come along for moral support. Out of respect, Mike was in uniform, even if he wasn't technically here in an official capacity like his friend was. Rob, adorned in a similar uniform but of Sergeant ranking, was here to hear of his service fate, the day finally coming for his medical specialists to meet minds with his commanding officers to decide whether he could be fit to return to service any time soon. Leila wouldn't have been allowed in this part of the brig, so Mike became a hemorrhoid and didn't take no for an answer when Rob said he was fine to come to the meeting alone. On the outside, he had seemed fine, albeit reserved. He didn't say much, though, and didn't make much eye contact either. Mike knew this meant Rob was worried and nervous inside, just trying not to make a big deal out of it. Who wouldn't be nervous or worried? Everything he had worked for and achieved could be on the chopping block, especially when Rob himself knew he still wasn't right after the trauma in Afghanistan.

It wasn't long before Rob exited the main building and came storming across the court yard, a deep-set frown on his features. His foot falls were heavy in the snow, and seemed to be only glancing up to make sure he didn't plough into anyone... )

Rob couldn't decide whether things were awkward or not. It felt like it should be awkward, and he knew it wasn't exactly an ideal situation, but it wasn't actually unpleasant. He did suspect Mike agreed to come to dinner because he felt guilty about what happened to Rob. Not that it was his fault, but when you're a soldier and a friend gets injured like this, there is a sense of guilt and responsibility to do what you can to help them. There was definitely a distinct hesitation and wariness once Rob revealed that Leila had invited Rachel to the dinner, too. In fact, Rob really thought Mike would pull out, but again, he must have had some sort of sense of obligation.

This was the first time Rob had met Rachel, and she seemed really nice... )
